Last Potlatch of the Year
Last night we attended the last big potlatch of the year, a memorial one for the Humchit family. We missed the tombstone revealing, and the mourning songs, but came for the feast and the dancing. It was a big feast with a good sized crowd 300-400, as the crowds came and went. The feast was seafood, and we sat with Joanna, one of the teachers, as well as Ryan and Curtis, two of Jackie's friends. Angelica didn't eat dinner with us, she was at a party for a friend, and only showed up for the dancing later.

Coffee House
Last night the school hosted a coffee house night and Tom performed--a monumentous occasion as he has only played in public three times as far as I know. Once in Tuk, at the Christmas Concert, once here, at the Christmas Concert, both of those with students. This weekend he rocked the hall at Grampa Moses funeral, that makes three.
He played four songs, made some jokes and had a great time. We spoke to Brenda about having a guitar and singing night at the school once a month next year...she seemed very excited about the idea. Sadly Annie, who organised this coffee house will not be here next year.

This Year So Far
Trying to catch up on 9 months of events seems a little challenging, but since it is the busiest time of the year for us I thought it would be a good idea to start right now.
We are in the middle of preparing to leave for the summer, with all the small easy to forget but terribly important jobs to do, like booking our ferry out, mailing our bills...and of course it is the busiest time at school too. We have sports day, three different awards days, grad, a concert, three feasts, and the children's cultural concert. Report cards are due, the classrooms need to be cleaned out, supplies for next year need to be ordered, the house has to be cleaned, they are installing baseboard heaters in our house this week, and I am trying to finish off Angelica's button blanket. And I have to fly out to go to court with Jackie in themiddle of all of this.
But I really want to start a blog.
Moving here was a good idea, most of the time. We really had no choice, as Redstone was sinking and we didn't want to sink with it. Bella Bella was our first choice, the only job Tom applied for, and we were offered it the next day so it seemed like it was meant to be.
The move was difficult, who knew that you couldn't move from Redstone to Bella Coola to Bella Bella, you had to go the other way. Redstone, Vancouver, Bella Bella. But we managed. More or less with all of our belongings. We drove up after them with the two cats and the dog.
